Client Request:
Enhance Living Room area in need of bookcase, drawers for toys and additional storage with ship lap display area for behind the television.
Design:
Final custom built in size was 14’3″ wide by 9’6″ tall.
Because of the size of this piece I designed it to be built in several pieces for ease of transport and installation but for it to look like it was one built in place piece once installed.
For young family, durability and ease of care, I focused on using materials that can stand up to daily use, without need of worrying about dents, scratches or regular maintenance of wood past usual dusting/wipe down cleaning.
Materials Used:
I use Blum brand concealed soft close drawer slides and Blum concealed hinges in most builds with drawers and doors.
Wood
I prefer using birch as a paint grade lumber. It’s a little more expensive than poplar, but it’s a much harder wood, which makes it more durable, and I find it paints better.
Finish
I chose a milk paint for this project. Milk paint has much more viscosity than regular paint. I find it lays down better than traditional paint, giving it a cleaner finish. The final coat is a water based poly acrylic, for a clear, durable finish.
